Even though a lot of people think that shortness of breath happens near the end of pregnancy, it can actually happen as well during early pregnancy, which is the first and second trimester. In the first trimester of pregnancy, the increase of progesterone hormone can be a trigger for shortness of breath.

Most pregnant women feel short of breath both in early and late pregnancy. This is generally harmless and does not affect the amount of oxygen your baby gets (Source 01 ).

Progesterone Hormone

The progesterone hormone will stimulate the brain to send a message for the lungs to inhale more breath. Therefore, pregnant women often feel like they need to take deep breaths more often. This is one of the ways that the body adapts during pregnancy, as well as obtaining more oxygen for the fetus.

Besides that, shortness of breath often happens in the third trimester because the ovary presses the muscle below the ribs, which pushes the lungs as well. Pregnant women may be able to breathe more freely a few weeks before giving birth, as the baby has moved down to the pelvis.

Getting Rid of Shortness Of Breath During Pregnancy

There are some ways that may relieve pregnant women and make them able to breathe more freely. The first one is to adjust their sitting position. They should sit straight and pull their shoulders back while doing so, as this sitting position gives enough space for the lungs for oxygen intake.

If they feel shortness of breath when they are in a lying position, then they can add some additional pillows to support their back.

Avoiding Being in a Rush

Other than that, little things like avoiding being in a rush when performing activities and instead of making time to relax should help a pregnant woman from suffering shortness of breath. This is because tenseness will only trigger the shortness of breath to be felt more by the expecting mother. However, this does not mean that pregnant women should rest all the time as an unfit body can also trigger shortness of breath during early pregnancy.

Beware of Potentially Dangerous Symptoms

It is important to be aware of some signs that may indicate that the shortness of breath is potentially dangerous. These signs include tachycardia (fast heart rate), lips or fingers that are either pale or blue and chest pains. Constant coughing with fever, shivering, or a bloody cough is also another warning sign.

The mentioned symptoms can occur out of nowhere or rapidly worsening. If you suffer from shortness of breath during pregnancy, do not hesitate to deliver your complaint to your gynecologist.
