Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by an organism called Trichomonas vaginalis . Thus the people most affected are young women who are sexually active.
The symptoms of Trichomonas are green frothy discharge and red painful swelling of the vagina. It may also be uncomfortable to urinate. Males may get swelling of the end of their penis.
Diagnosis is made with vaginal or penile swabs and these will be done if symptoms occur but also sometimes it will be picked up when swabs are done for other things such as pregnancy or smear tests.
All patients with Trichomonas and their partners for the last 6 to 12 weeks should be treated with oral tablets for the condition sometimes they can also be given in the form of vaginal tablets or pessories.
Complications and Implications
Although sexually transmitted it is not thought to cause any damage or sterility in women or men but it can be uncomfortable both as a disease and to tell your sexual partners about
